Fortaleza, February 3, 2023 – V.tal, one of the largest end-to-end neutral digital infrastructure solutions companies, operating in Brazil and 5 other countries in South and North America, inaugurates its second edge data center in the city of Fortaleza – CE, which will operate with a capacity of 4MW and will have  four data halls with space to accommodate 400 racks.

Called “Big Lobster”, the new edge data center is fully integrated with its Cable Landing Station (CLS) located in Praia do Futuro, with connection redundancy, which promotes greater security in data transmission due to possible external interference. It will also be integrated into the company’s other edge data center, totaling a park with about 7,000 m2 of built area, capacity greater than 5MW and more than 600 rack positions.

CLS, which has been operating since 2002, has a relevant role for the Brazilian internet. It contains the central PIX (traffic exchange point) of Ceará, which registers the third largest volume of internet traffic in Brazil, allowing operators and providers to exchange traffic directly and access content from the main OTTs of great interest to users.

The entire V.tal complex in Praia do Futuro, formed by the CLS buildings and the edge data center, received ISO 27001 certification for using a management system for the colocation service (rental of web hosting space, understood as physical space and infrastructure) that guarantees permanent availability in energy, air conditioning, fire safety, physical and logical access security (monitoring).

With the launch of the “Big Lobster”, V.tal now has 4 complete edge data centers in operation (two in Fortaleza, one in Rio de Janeiro and another in Barranquilla, Colombia), connected by 26,000 kilometers of underwater optical cables that connect Brazil to Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Bermuda and the United States.

“V.tal will invest in the expansion of its data center park, because it complements our capillarity and presence in all regions of Brazil, in addition to meeting the present and future demands of our customers, due to innovations and new technologies that have emerged. We already have contracts with clients for more than 1,000 of our more than 3,000 POPs (Points of Presence) spread throughout the country, which have been transformed into micro edge data centers, consolidating our strategic option in this business,” explains Eduardo Silveira, V.tal’s Vice President of Strategy.

Expansion to the southern cone

V.tal also started the project of implementing a 4MW edge data center in the city of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, which, like the entire region, concentrates a strong economy and several technological hubs, having a privileged location to serve customers from the southern cone countries that border Brazil. The land in the state capital was already acquired by the company at the end of 2022 and the construction of this edge computing structure is part of V.tal’s expansion plan.

“Demands for more speed and lower latency are increasing worldwide, especially among Brazilians who are often “heavy users” with new applications and technologies. With this, we need to offer our customers, who are operators, providers and OTTs, the necessary capabilities with quality and resilience to serve end users with the best experience. This requires more and more edge data centers and investment in increasing the capacity and capillarity of our network to enable IoT (Internet of Things), Metaverse and other applications”, comments Bento Louro, Vice President of Wholesale at V.tal.

New edge data center in Barranquilla

V.tal is also expanding its capacity in Barranquilla, Colombia, where it has an integrated CLS and edge data center with a capacity of 500kW and 80 racks, opening, in the first half of the year, a second site, also adjacent to the current facilities, such as in Fortaleza. Known as “Chiva 2”, it will have a capacity of 2MW and space for up to 200 racks, which will create an environment conducive to a peering ecosystem in the region, which has a strategic geographic position for serving US customers.

When completed, the Barranquilla complex will have a capacity of more than 2.5MW and 280 rack positions.
